"There's no way of looking at a work of art by itself; it's not self-evident - it needs a history."
– Willem de Kooning
At DYLArt, we believe
in a history that is both historical and critical, local and global. One that embraces diversity as the essential element in capturing any kind of history. And we believe that the art history we offer you should be at the forefront of the discipline. That’s why we encourage free-thinking, innovative classes that take chances, tell alternative narratives, and foreground under-recognized frameworks.
We think art matters. And we think it matters a lot more when it’s addressed to an engaged, critical public than when it’s addressed merely to the market. Without a critical audience, art ceases to carry cultural relevance beyond its function as a status symbol and consumer good. We help you learn about art and visual culture so that you can become one such critical audience member.
Through this education, you will get more out of art and visual culture when traveling, when visiting art museums and galleries, and in your everyday life.
